As part of Common Ground's Grand Opening Week, we held an Apple Pie Contest on Saturday, October 4. A panel of judges declared member Jenny Ravanh the winner! Here is her winning recipe!

Blue Ribbon Apple Pie

Makes 8 servings

Unbaked pie crust dough for a 9" pie

Filling:
8 local, organic apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt

Topping:
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
3/4 cup unbleached, all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/3 cup chilled Earth Balance Buttery Sticks, cut into small pieces

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
2. Roll dough into a 12" circle. Fit into a a 9" pie pan. Trim excess dough, leaving a 1" overhang; make a decorative edge.
3. To prepare filling, mix together all ingredients. Spoon into crust.
4. To prepare topping, in a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, flour, and nutmeg. Using a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut margarine into brown sugar mixture until coarse crumbs form. Sprinkle apples evenly with topping.
5. Bake pie until topping is lightly browned and filling is bubbly, about 45 minutes. If pie is over-browning, cover loosely with aluminum foil. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
